Malachi 3:10

BRING ALL THE TITHES INTO THE STOREHOUSE, THAT THERE MAY BE MEAT IN MY HOUSE, AND PROVE ME NOW, SAYS THE LORD OF HOSTS, IF I WILL NOT OPEN THE WINDOWS OF HEAVEN, AND POUR YOU OUT A BLESSING, THAT THERE SHALL NOT BE ROOM ENOUGH TO RECEIVE.

This is the Old testament description of giving.

Tithing, whether under the law or not, changed when the new testament was enacted at the resurrection of Jesus Christ. At the resurrection of Jesus Christ, the gentiles were admitted unprecedented  access to a relationship with God. That is what Malachi 1:11 is referring to.

The following is the New Testament prophecy about the tithe . Same Old Testament book. I have been attending church for more than 30 years and have yet to hear this scripture preached.

MALACHI 1:11 (KJV)

For from the rising of the sun even unto the going down of the same my name shall be great among the Gentiles; and in every place incense shall be offered unto my name, and a pure offering: for my name shall be great among the heathen, saith the Lord of hosts.

This is what the Church of Today has NOT seen.

  1. From the rising of the sun to its going down God will be praised by the gentiles as well.
  2. In every place the incense of praise will be offered.
  3. Now it is called an offering.

Acts 21:28 (NIV)

shouting, “Fellow Israelites, help us! This is the man who teaches everyone everywhere against our people and our law and this place. And besides, he has brought Greeks into the temple and defiled this holy place.”

Paul was persecuted because he would not follow their traditions about the temple, the people and the law(tithe).

So what has changed?  Previously you had to bring the whole tithe into the storehouse.

This is no longer the case. Read the following examples of what people did with the tithe(offering).

Does tithing or giving somehow bring you into right standing with God?  NO

Luke 11:42 (NIV)

“Woe to you Pharisees, because you give God a tenth of your mint, rue and all other kinds of garden herbs, but you neglect justice and the love of God. You should have practiced the latter without leaving the former undone.

Luke 18:12 (NIV)

I fast twice a week and give a tenth of all I get.’   Still not justified

What is the Tithe(offering) for?

Acts 20:35 (NIV)

In everything I did, I showed you that by this kind of hard work we must help the weak, remembering the words the Lord Jesus himself said: ‘It is more blessed to give than to receive.’ ”

How do I as a believer handle the tithe/offering?

1 CORINTHIANS 16:2 (NIV)

On the first day of every week each one of you should set aside a sum of money in keeping with your income, saving it up, so that when I come no collections will have to be made(set up a separate bank account just for giving).

What am I to store it up for?

Verse one says Now about the collection for the Lord's people: Do what I told the Galatian churches to do.

Share with each other!

What amount should I give?

2 CORINTHIANS 9:7 (NIV)

Each of you should give what you have decided in your heart to give, Not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver.

Am I responsible in any other way with my tithe/offering?

MATHEW 15:3-6 (NIV)

Jesus replied (to the Pharisees) And why do you break the command of God (ten commandments) for the sake of your tradition? For God said, "Honor your father and mother' and 'Anyone who curses their father or mother is to be put to death.' But you say that if anyone declares that what might have been used to help their father or mother is 'devoted to God,' they are not to 'honor their father or mother' with it. Thus you nullify the word of God for the sake of your tradition.

Clearly Jesus is placing caring for ones parents is before tithing/offerings to the church.

  1. Set aside money into a separate account
  2. Pray about the amount to set aside. Stay in agreement with your spouse
  3. Take care of your family that has needs.
  4. Pray about what to do with the additional funds.
  5. Support the body of Christ as long as they are helping the needy and are focused on the great commission and missions. Especially if they care for widows and orphans in their distress.
  6. Give to those you see in need. Forget the tax exemption it is only a trap to stop you.

People who are following this scriptural giving are finding joy, peace and experiencing cheerful giving.  Some are finding that staying with percentages makes this easier.

For example one respected brother in the Lord found that He decided to still give ten percent to the church however only if they dedicate 1/3  to the poor then 1/3 to missions. the remaining 1/3 is for church administration.

I asked Him if He found a place that follows that. He said He did not so here is how he handled His Tithe/Offering. He said I am giving 1/3 of my tithe/offering to the church. His reasoning was that the church was using ALL the tithe/offering for administration and nothing for the widow and orphan and no budget for missions or outreach.

So He wants to be faithful to God. He does not confuse faithfulness to a local church and faithfulness to God. They are not the same. He helps the local church but uses the rest of the funds for the poor, widows, orphans, missions and outreach. He plans one day to answer to God alone and does not plan on making excuses for His actions or inaction. Sounds wise.

P.S.

He began this system of giving when He started to glean wisdom from Apostles and Prophets.
